In Adolf Frohner‘s lifetime, the Forum Frohner was built in the former Stein Minorite Church in Krems as a new exhibition and event venue in the Krems Museums district. It presents Frohner’s complete oeuvre next to other contemporary works by other Austrian and foreign artists.
Adolf Frohner was an Austrian painter, sculptor and graphic artist. 1952 he attended lectures as a visiting student in the class of Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. 1961 he was awarded a grant to live in Paris where he worked as a freelance artist in the circle of the Nouveaux Réalistes. After his return to Vienna he founded the movement Viennese Actionism together with Hermann Nitsch and Otto Muehl, but then distanced himself from the Actionists and returned to Paris where he worked in the studio of Daniel Spoerri.
Frohner focused more and more on pure painting and drawing. He was concerned with the theme of violence, especially against women.
Frohner’s works were shown in major galleries and museum throughout the world from the early 1960s, including the Biennale in Venice (1970) and the Künstlerhaus in Vienna (1993). He received numerous awards including the Austrian State Prize in 1972. The same year he was appointed professor at the University of Applied Arts, where he taught a masterclass for painting from 1985 to 2005.
